Session Monitoring
Understanding Session Monitoring Information
A user can verify information on terminals accessed to a cluster AP on the Sessions page. Each terminal is displayed as the user's name and MAC address.
To view the statistics of a specific terminal session, select the related item from the drop down list and click the Go button. A user can verify all information described on the following table such as Idle Time, Data Rate, Signal, and Utilization.
"Session" means a duration that a terminal having the solitary MAC address keeps the connection with a wireless network. The session starts when a terminal accesses to a network and terminates when the terminal is logged off intentionally or the access is disconnected by a reason.
Note
A Session is different with an Association that means that a terminal accesses to a specific AP. In the same session, the connection of a terminal and a network can be transferred from a cluster AP to another cluster AP. A terminal keeps a session through roaming between APs.
For information on Associations monitoring and Link Integrity Monitoring, refer to Associated Wireless Clients.
The following table describes detailed session information.
Item Description User Name Means a name of a user who using an IEEE 802.1x terminal.Note: This item is related to terminals accessing to an AP that uses IEEE 802.1x security mode and local authentication server. (For information on IEEE 802.1x security mode, see IEEE 802.1x.) It is not available to verify the user's name of a terminal that accesses to an AP using an IEEE 802.1x security mode or another security mode on RADIUS. AP Location Indicates the location of the access point. This item is obtained from the location description set up in the Basic Settings menu. User MAC Address Indicates the MAC address of a user's terminal. The MAC address is a hardware address to identify each network node. Idle Time Indicates total duration that a terminal is in "idle" status. The "idle" status means a status that a terminal transmits or receives data. Data Rate Indicates the transfer rate used when an AP transmits data to the related terminal. The unit of data rate is Mbps (megabits per second). The value of this item is a value within the transfer rate set range for the IEEE 802.1x mode that an AP uses. As an example, the value for 802.11a is a value between 6 and 54. Signal Indicates the RF signal strength of an AP received by a terminal. This item uses an IEEE 802.1x item that is called Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI). The value of this item is a value between 0 and 100.RSSI is measured by IEEE 802.1x mechanism implemented to the network interface card (NIC). Utilization Indicates the utilization rate of a terminal. For example, if the station is "active" (transmitting and receiving data) 90% of the time and inactive 10% of the time, its "utilization rate" is 90%. Receive Total Indicates the total number of packets that a terminal receives during the current session. Transmit Total Total packets transferred by a terminal during the current session. Error Rate Indicates the percentage of time frames are dropped during transmission on this access point.
Viewing Session Information for Access Points
You can view session information for all access points on the network at the same time, or set the display to show session information for a specified access point chosen from the drop-down menu at the top of the screen.
To view information on all access points, select the Show all access points radio button at the top of the page.
To view session information on a particular access point, select the Show only this access point radio button and choose the access point name from the drop-down menu.
Sorting Session Information
To order (sort) the information shown in the tables by a particular indicator, click on the column label by which you want to order things. For example, if you want to see the table rows ordered by Utilization rate, click on the Utilization column label. The entries will be sorted by Utilization rate.
Refreshing Session Information
You can force an update of the information displayed on the Session Monitoring page by clicking the Refresh button.
